Milanese Rijst

Aan de student

This text has been written for young people who have just started studying Dutch outside the Netherlands and Flanders. Its aim is to develop the pleasure of reading a story in simplified Dutch, without the help of a dictionary or a teacher. If you have studied Dutch for more than 60 hours, depending also on your experience with foreign languages, you can probably read it by yourself. Don’t try to understand every word, but try to grasp what the story is about and while reading, forget about your dictionary. Try to read it for the fun of it!
In this story you will sometimes find the characters taking slightly extreme positions where Dutch society is concerned but don’t take this as an average position (and for that matter, don’t take any point of view as the average Dutchman’s position!)
Separately you will also find a few exercises which you can do, if you feel the need to practice with the new words and structures you will inevitably meet. Keys to the exercises are included, so that you will not have any difficulties in correcting your efforts. Anyway, first of all enjoy yourself reading! Please contact me if you should have any remarks: m.dingenouts@fastwebnet.it

About the story

A Dutch couple, Bart and Marlies, on holiday in Milan, Italy, meet an Italian student of Dutch, who is willing to show them the sites, on the condition that they speak Dutch together. In spite of Bart’s doubts about the real intentions of Giacomo, the young Italian, they visit the whole city and even get to enjoy the night life. A story about a relaxed encounter between cultures topped off with red wine… Or rather, a clash served out with beer?
